Assessing Home Care Options

Home care is a great option for healthy aging in place. If you're new to the space, however, it can be overwhelming to know what you need, where to get started, and how to assess if the solution you select is working.

Here is a basic flow chart for navigating home care options and services:

  1. Assess the individual's needs: Consider the individual's physical, emotional, and social needs, as well as any special requirements they may have (e.g. dietary restrictions, mobility issues).

  2. Determine the type of care needed: Based on the assessment, determine whether the individual requires medical care, personal care (e.g. bathing, dressing), or both.

  3. Explore options: Research the various home care options available, including in-home care, adult day care centers, and assisted living facilities. Consider factors such as cost, location, and services offered.

  4. Select a provider: Once you have identified a few potential providers, schedule visits to tour their facilities and meet with staff. Ask about the qualifications and experience of their caregivers, as well as their policies and procedures.

  5. Make arrangements: Once you have selected a provider, work with them to develop a care plan and schedule. Be sure to communicate any specific instructions or preferences you have.

  6. Monitor the care: It is important to regularly check in on the individual receiving care to ensure that their needs are being met and that they are happy with the care they are receiving. If any issues arise, communicate them with the care provider and work together to resolve them.
